The ewb Story

Education without Borders (EwB) was founded in 2002 by Cecil and Ruth Hershler, two ex-South Africans living in Vancouver, who have continued to be at its helm since its inception. Initial funds raised in Vancouver enabled new classrooms and a science laboratory to be built at Fezeka High School in Gugulethu. In 2009, they established an after-school programme that has continued to provide tutoring, personal mentorship and individualized support in township schools in the Western Cape. The EwB team in South Africa planted a school garden, built a school library and ran the after-school programme.

This last decade: EwB expanded from Fezeka High School to four additional sites: Mseki Primary School, Nobantu Community Centre and Bellville South Primary and High Schools.

Covid relief

2020 and 2021 has seen EwB provide relief for food shortages throughout the pandemic. While schools were closed and many parents out of work, EwB provided food for learners and their families at each of the 5 sites. Home-based learning was maintained throughout this challenging period by providing regular worksheets for the learners.
